The Department of Biological Sciences congratulates Dr. Martin Chalfie for his election to the American Philosophical Society in recognition of his scientific achievements. The American Philosophical Society, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, is the oldest learned society in North America, dedicated to the promotion of useful knowledge across all fields of study. Renowned for introducing Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) as a biological marker, Dr. Chalfie studies nerve cell development in C. elegans and currently chairs the Committee on Human Rights for the US National Academies.
