Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Job Opportunity

Studying cancer genomes with CRISPR at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

The Sheltzer Lab at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking a research technician for a cutting-edge project applying CRISPR to dissect drug targets in cancer.

Cancer cells require the expression of certain genes, called “addictions” or “genetic dependencies”, that encode proteins necessary for tumor growth. Targeting the proteins encoded by these genes can trigger cell death and durable tumor regression. The Sheltzer Lab is applying CRISPR to study genetic dependencies in cancer in order to identify new therapeutic vulnerabilities and targets for drug development. Additionally, through CRISPR mutagenesis, we investigate the on-target and off-target effects of different cancer drugs, with profound implications for their clinical use.

The technician will apply multiple laboratory methods, including CRISPR-based gene targeting, nucleic acid preparations, gel electrophoresis, western blotting, and flow cytometry, to investigate the biology of cancer. The successful candidate will have strong data analysis skills, and will be comfortable performing as well as interpreting the results of experiments in molecular biology.

This position is ideal for recent graduates seeking to gain additional research experience before applying to graduate school or medical school, though candidates with other backgrounds will also be considered. We are looking for a candidate who is able to start in November or December 2018, and who can commit at least 18 months to the position.

Position Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in a biology, chemistry, molecular biology, or a related scientific discipline.

• 2+ years of research experience in a molecular biology lab or a Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline.

• Strong communication, organization, and data analysis skills. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a non-profit research institution located on Long Island that has been at the forefront of biology research for over 125 years. Home to eight Nobel Laureates, Cold Spring Harbor provides an immersive and highly-collaborative research environment about 45 minutes outside of New York City. Cold Spring Harbor is an NCI-designated Cancer Center, and every year, over 10,000 scientists journey to Cold Spring Harbor to attend one of CSHL’s famous Meetings and Courses.

More information on research in the Sheltzer lab can be found on the Sheltzer lab website:

http://sheltzerlab.labsites.cshl.edu/.

Interested students can apply via CSHL’s HR portal:

https://cshl.peopleadmin.com/postings/14425.

CSHL is an EO/AA Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability or protected veteran status.
