Finances, Health, & Housing
The University provides subsidized housing for Ph.D. students within a short walk from the laboratories in the pleasant and lively Columbia neighborhood, populated mainly by faculty, students, and University staff. Incoming Ph.D. students are guaranteed an offer of housing and are eligible to rent housing at the Columbia rate for a period of up to five academic years.
Morningside Heights is one of the safest neighborhoods in New York. All Columbia-owned buildings are managed and operated by University employees, and the University takes special measures to provide a secure living environment for all its residents. University Apartment Housing's Director of Security Operations instructs and oversees all building personnel on security and safety procedures. All Columbia-owned buildings have superintendents residing either in or very near the building.
Subway stations at 110th Street, 116th Street, and 125th Street, as well as numerous public bus stops and the West Side Highway, provide Heights residents with access to the rest of New York City and the metropolitan area. Broadway, Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues, and 125th Street are the main commercial streets in the area, offering a variety of food markets, restaurants, cafes, shops, and bookstores.
