Title: Mechanisms of Fe2+ transport in ferroportin and Fe3+ reduction in stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1
Abstract: Research in my lab focuses on membrane-embedded enzymes and transporters with the goal of visualizing these proteins in different functional states and understanding the physical and chemical basis for the mechanisms of catalysis or transport. I will present our work on two proteins, one is ferroportin, an iron transporter that exports the divalent ferrous ion, and another is stearoyl-CoA desaturase, an enzyme that has a novel diiron center and oxidizes ferrous ions to facilitate formation a double bond on an acyl chain.
