Title: Curating and Administering a Portfolio at the Intersection of Iron and Cancer

Abstract: As the role of iron metabolism in cancer progression and therapy gains prominence, establishing a cohesive research landscape requires a blend of scientific insight and administrative experience. Drawing on my experience as Program Director, this presentation provides a dual-perspective look at building a high-impact research portfolio from the ground up. I will first detail the strategic development of the "Iron and Cancer" portfolio, highlighting how emerging trends like ferroptosis and dysregulation of iron metabolism in cancer were identified and prioritized. The discussion will then shift to the mechanics of program administration. I will outline the lifecycle of grants, portfolio management—from initial curation and funding oversight to the long-term stewardship of funded projects. Attendees will gain a transparent understanding of how programmatic leadership transforms a niche scientific interest into a robust, sustainable research program.
