Title: Biogenesis of small RNAs and non-canonical RNPs in worms and yeast

Abstract: My lab studies the gene regulatory mechanisms mediated by small RNAs in C. elegans and RNA binding proteins in S. cerevisiae.  In this seminar, I will present two stories: 1) The mechanisms by which piRNAs – small RNA that silence transposons in the germline – are transcribed in a sexually dimorphic manner by coopting an ancient transcription complex to regulate animal fertility. 2) How metabolic enzymes bind RNA to form RNP granules as a potential adaptive mechanism to survive hypoxic stress.
